Henan Province, Huaibin Central Port, located in the main channel of the Huaihe River, is the nearest and fastest port in Tongjiang, Henan Province. From this, goods can be transported to coastal cities and loaded onto ocean-going freighters at ports such as Shanghai, Ningbo, and Lianyungang, thereby building a "great channel for the Central Plains to go to sea" to enable global freight transportation in Henan.

In the bright port command hall behind the port area, key information such as navigation channels, docks, ships entering and leaving the port and cargo loading and unloading are displayed on the big screen in real time, and efficient scheduling is carried out through the information platform and 5G terminals. The efficient operation of a deep-water harbour stimulates the infinite vitality of the regional economy. Dong Lin, general manager of Xinyang Huaihe Port Group Co., Ltd., said that since its sailing in January 2022, Huaibin Central Port has opened 10 container routes directly to Bengbu, Huai'an, Zhapu in Jiaxing and Yangluo in Wuhan, and the annual throughput has jumped by 10,000, 30,000 and 50,000 TEUs.

At the same time, construction of the special railway line in Huaibin Port Area has been accelerated, and the "iron-water combined transport" is about to achieve a key breakthrough. The expansion and upgrading project of Huaibin Central Port Area has started, aiming to double port capacity.

Thousands of miles long, navigation has been a tradition since ancient times. Xinyang has 363.5 kilometres of the Huaihe River, with a navigable mileage of 324 kilometres, accounting for 18% of the navigable waterway mileage (1,825 kilometres) in Henan. At present, the navigable section of the Huaihe River, 126km from Gushi sanhejian to Luxian Estuary in Xixian County, is only a fourth-class waterway, which can handle 500-ton ships all year round and 2000-ton vessels in the wet season. To realise the high-quality development of inland river shipping, it is imperative to upgrade the waterway grade.

Wang Zhiqiang, secretary of the Party branch of the Huaihe River Waterway Promotion Project Department of China Communications Broadcasting Bureau, said that the first section of the third-class waterway in Henan is expected to be navigable by the end of this year, and 3,000-ton cargo ships can reach Huaibin directly.

Entering the shipbuilding workshop of Henan Ruihang Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. in the port area of Huaihe River in Xixian County, two Norwegian-made mooring boats (CCS) in the port area are about to be completed, and four 105-meter tourist barges in the factory area are being assembled, with more than 10 barges.

An 88-meter distribution dual-purpose cargo ship under construction is scattered in the sectional construction access area and the general assembly berth, waiting for completion.

Gui Yongkun, the general manager of the company, said: "As the only enterprise in Henan that has obtained the factory certification of China Classification Society and the ship assembly unit with the qualification of sea-going ship construction, the company has successfully obtained the qualification of building 120-meter LNG new energy 10,000-ton cargo ships, and four 88-meter LNG distribution dual-purpose cargo ships will be started in December, which will once again set a new record for the shipbuilding industry in Henan."
